Update: Action that Labour is taking to help families,
businesses and pensioners:
From 1 April-
- Pensions increased to £90.70 a week for a
single person.
- 4 days extra paid holiday for full time
workers. Since 1 October 2007 all workers have had a
statutory right to at least 4.8 weeks paid annual leave (that's 24
days paid holiday if you work five days a week). From 1 April 2009
this entitlement will increase to 5.6 weeks (28 days).
- Child tax credit increases. Tax credits
are payments from the government. If someone is responsible for at
least one child or young person who normally lives with them, they
may qualify for Child Tax Credit. The amount paid varies depending
on individual circumstances.
- Free prescriptions for people being treated
for cancer.
- Free vascular screening for people aged 40
-74. Vascular diseases are among the most common causes of
premature death in the UK.
- Care Quality Commission comes in to being. The
Commission will regulate and improve the quality of health and
social care and will look after the interests of people detained
under the Mental Health Act.
- Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act comes
in to force. The 2008 Act revises and updates the existing
legislation for assisted reproduction and makes changes to the
regulation and licensing of the use of embryos in research and
therapy. The new Act also includes provisions for research on
different types of embryos and changes the definition of legal
parenthood for cases involving assisted reproduction.
- European convention against human trafficking
becomes binding in the UK.
The UK will have EU-wide agreed minimum standards for protecting
and supporting trafficking victims. The convention also strengthens
the UK’s ability to catch the criminals that exploit victims of
trafficking and underlines the government’s long-term commitment to
tackling this horrific crime.
- Launch of new single complaints system for the
NHS and adult social care services. There will be a new
single approach to dealing with complaints. It will encourage a
culture that seeks and then uses people’s experiences to make
services more effective, personal and safe.
- Sex offender lie detector pilot tests are
introduced.
- Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) graduated
fixed penalties on road safety coming into force. There
will be new power to graduate fixed penalty amounts according to
the type and degree of offence (ie varying amounts of £60, £120 or
£200). There will also be power to vary the number of penalty
points endorsed on driving licences according to type, location,
severity of offence and location of offence.
- Renewables Obligation Order comes in to effect. This is the UK
Government’s support scheme for large-scale renewable
electricity generation until 2037.
From 5th April
- Statutory maternity and paternity pay
increases from £117.18 to £123.06 per week
6th April
- The weekly rate of statutory sick pay (SSP)
increases from £75.40 to £79.15.
Pension credit increase.
- If you're aged 60 or over you may be entitled to
Pension Credit - extra money each week.
- Employment Act 2008 provisions come into force
– it strengthens, simplifies and clarifies key aspects of UK
employment law, including strengthened enforcement of the
national minimum wage.
The right to request flexible working will be
extended to parents of children up to the age of 16.
Health in Pregnancy Grant comes in to force with a
one-off payment of £190 for every mum-to-be who’s
at least 25 weeks pregnant.
